Waiting Here For You

When the call came I took heed,
To fight within this hour of need
I said "My lady, I must go"
"To fight and slay our deadly foe."
To which she said, "Take care, my dear"
"Within my heart you're always near"
"I will be waiting here for you,"
"I will be waiting here for you."
My heart was heavy, my sight was dim,
Aboard the ship with men so grim,
To recover that which was our own,
Within my heart her love still shone.
As I watched men live and die,
I recalled her last goodbye:
"I will be waiting here for you,"
"I will be waiting here for you."
We knew our cause was just and right,
Our foe's hearts were black as night;
On and on the battles raged,
Our lives and more were being waged.
As we fought for every hill,
Her words echoed still:
"I will be waiting here for you,"
"I will be waiting here for you."
While deep within our foe's domain,
A war did end our good king's reign;
Cities sacked and temples burned,
To death and ruin we returned.
As we slew them all with sword & steel,
Deep within, I knew for real,
"She will be waiting there for me,"
"She will be waiting there for me."
And after foes were all laid down,
I traveled back to my own town,
To find it burned down to the ground,
And my love nowhere to be found.
The people came and said, "Be brave,"
"Your lady, she lies within her grave,"
"She waited here for you,"
"Yes, she waited here for you."
And though my lady is dead and gone,
Still her love lingers on,
It echoes in the darkest night,
Shining light so pure and bright.
And still she says, "Take care, my dear"
"Within my heart you're always near"
"I will be waiting here for you,"
"I will be waiting here for you."

Unknown date.

This is probably one of my first "song-like" poems. It's a sad poem, with a little bit of hope at the end. The original poem did not have the last verse, but I thought that I should add it to make it a little less depressing. :)

A few people on a bygone online service (QuantumLink - anyone remember it?) complimented me on this poem and urged me to write more. I wrote another poem, "A Thousand Times", which is pretty awful. If you really would like to read it, email me and I'll send it. :)
