Highwater Marks

Oh yes, love has come,
And love has gone,
The tides e'er changing;
Soon we rise,
And soon we fall,
My heart is e'er ranging;
I'm searching for
The one before
Before this loss once more;
I'm reaching out,
And reaching back
For the ever distant shore.

Looking at the highwater marks,
Looking at the signs of love before;
Thinking of what love has done,
Thinking of what love could bring once more;
Looking at the highwater marks,
Remembering what love had done before;
Hoping that love will come again,
To wipe out those highwater marks
With my greatest love once more.

And still, love is gone,
Yes, love is gone,
My heart is in decline;
Love is fading fast,
It'll never last,
The world has lost its shine;
Looking for an open door,
To love once more,
To set my soul on fire;
Just one more chance,
I'll take my stance,
To fight for my desire.

Looking at the highwater marks,
Looking at the signs of love before;
Thinking of what love has done,
Thinking of what love could bring once more;
Looking at the highwater marks,
Remembering what love had done before;
Hoping that love will come again,
To wipe out those highwater marks
With my greatest love once more.

Written September 3, 1988

I wrote this one in a hotel room in Halifax, another one of my solo journeys. I remember the scene particularly because it was that afternoon when I saw Sarah McLachlan on TV. Life hasn't been the same for me. ;)

There was some inspiration from Dan Fogelberg's "Hearts In Decline". This was my first attempt at a country song. :)
